The North Coast MPA Sandy Beach Surf Zone Team

Part of the statewide effort studying sandy beach surf zone communities, we work with college students to study fish and invertebrate populations in and adjacent to Marine Protected Areas in the Far Northern Coast.

Paid technicians, mostly graduate and undergraduate Cal Poly Humboldt students, join us on multiple-day and day-long sampling trips where we use beach seines, Baited Remote Underwater Videos and Hook-and-Line fishing to collect surfperches, smelts, sculpins, Dungeness crabs and many other species that inhabit sandy beach surf zones.

Our field sites are located in Marin, Sonoma, Mendocino and Humboldt counties!

Stay Tuned! Our graduate student, Noah Angell, will be graduating this semester (congrats Noah!) but our funding provided by the CA Ocean Protection Council has been extended so we will be searching for a new graduate student. To stay up to date, check back to this website or follow the Department of Fisheries Biology Facebook and Instagram accounts.
